Diggin In The Crates; Kanye West Lesson

For those of us that dig in the crates, you're going to love this; a complete breakdown of the samples Kanye West used for his latest album "MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY". Without going into a full length post of albums and links, just peep the video below for a session in the mind of Kanye West.

I know a lot of people will be stunned by this, but as a DJ and a hardcore Hip-Hop head - I love it! Whoever said that the art of sampling is played out is insane. Hip-Hop was built on snatching breaks from albums and running them back to back on two turntables.

DARK FANTASY samples Mike Oldfield - In High Places
GORGEOUS interpolates Gene Clark and Roger McGuinn - You Showed Me
POWER samples Cold Grits - It’s Your Thing, Continent n° 6 – Afromerica, King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man
DEVIL IN A NEW DRESS samples Smokey Robinson - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow
RUNAWAY samples Backyard Heavies - Expo 83 & Rick James Live at Long Beach, CA
HELL OF A LIFE samples Mojo Men - She's My Baby, Black Sabbath - Iron Man, Tony Joe White - Stud-Spider
BLAME GAME samples Aphex Twin - Avril 14th
LOST IN THE WORLD samples M. DiBange - Soul Makossa, Lyn Collins - Think (About It), Bon Iver - The Woods, Gil-Scott Heron - Comment #1

Kanye West "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy"

I’ve seen it written that Kanye spent over $3 Million dollars of Def Jam’s money recording this album, but is there any doubt at all that Kanye is going to be worth the investment? Kanye has made one of the greatest returns I have ever seen from an artist and his buzz is off the charts right now. If there was any shadow of doubt, that had to have been completely erased with the success his “Runaway” short film enjoyed and Kanye’s popularity is still rising. Need another sign that Kanye’s return is one of the most anticipated? Consider the fact that the album cover itself has become a news story leading to a total of 5 various covers. Whichever is the least printed will undoubtedly become a collector’s item 50 years from now. Even with the entire album leaking all over the internet weeks ahead of its release Kanye will STILL win big with this album. Even with the insane buzz for other albums set for release between the 22nd and 30th of November - Kanye will STILL win big with this album.

Musically, this is one of the most imaginative and creative albums I have heard across all genres of music. Kanye is well known as a producer himself, but this album includes production from S1 (shoutout to my Dallas homie!), Bink (also currently working with Atiba on his album), No ID, RZA, etc. Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Madlib have also been mentioned with production credits. Before you even drop the needle on the record you can look at the list of producers and other appearing artists (Raekwon, RZA, Dwele, Nicki Minaj, Drake, BeyoncĂ© Knowles, Big Sean, Charlie Wilson, Justin Vernon, Jay-Z, Kid Cudi, Rick Ross, CyHi tha Prince, M.I.A., Mr Hudson, Tony Williams, Pusha T, Swizz Beatz, John Legend, Lloyd Banks, Alicia Keys, Fergie, Rihanna, The-Dream, Ryan Leslie, Elton John, Elly Jackson and Chris Rock)…THIS ALBUM IS THAT BIG!

I don’t have a single negative thing to say about the album. Honestly, from 1 through 13 this album is epic. Kanye provides a body of music that will cross every single barrier known to music. He’s got music for the clubs, for radio, for the streets; for every possible medium where music might be heard. He’s got music for hardcore Hip-Hop heads, crossover music for the Pop fans, straight soul music…try to understand there are touches of classical music in the mix, a splash of country flare, rock…THIS ALBUM IS THAT BIG! Production is incredible, lyrical delivery and content is bananas, arrangement literally plays out like a movie…okay – I do have one negative thing to say about the album: with 5 different versions of a cover – all 5 of them suck. There. Now you can’t call me a groupie.
